Many foreign nationals stressing about staying in the USA after graduation try to be selected for one of the 85,000 visas raffled in the H-1B lottery each year. (Winning odds this year were less than 20%). It’s not uncommon to participate for three years in a row and not be selected. But many aren't aware that they can bypass the lottery altogether by applying for an H-1B "Cap Exempt" job. How do you get one? Well, apply to work at potential employers, which include: (a) an institution of higher education (or anyone else, so long as you work on the premises of the institution); (b) Non-profit entities which are “related to” or “affiliated with” institutions of higher education; (c) Non-profit research organizations; and (d) Government research organizations.
