Big Updates for Asylum Seekers. As a U.S. immigration lawyer, I’ve seen a lot of anxiety lately regarding asylum interviews, but I have encouraging news to share. There's been a significant shift in how USCIS Asylum Offices are handling appointments, especially at the Newark, NJ and Tampa, FL offices.
Safety First: One of the biggest fears is detention during appointments. Recent observations show that these offices seem to be observing policies that prioritize a relaxed environment. At this time, there does not appear to be a legitimate fear of arrest during an interview.
A Better Atmosphere. The "vibe" matters! The mood during interviews in Newark and Tampa is friendly, often even more so than at local field offices. While the process remains formal, the professional and welcoming approach helps applicants to tell their stories with less fear.
No More All-Day Waits. There are many accounts of massive Newark delays at the end of 2025. However, a new system is in place. Applicants are spending significantly less time in the waiting room than they were just a few months ago. Efficiency is finally catching up. You need now be punctual for your appointment! The prior grace period of an hour has been reduced to just 30 minutes!
Ukrainian Community Spotlight. Ukrainian asylum seekers continue to appear for interviews in numbers. If you or a loved one are preparing for an upcoming appointment, now is the time to ensure your file is ready. Knowledge is power. Stay informed and stay safe.
Decisions on Hold. While Asylum Officers are concluding interviews by telling applicants (as recently as the first week of March 2026) that decisions will be mailed, they have been overtly stating that there is currently a pause on approving applications, and they cannot provide applicants with time frames as to when to expect decisions in the mail.
